Ruth Marie, daughter of Dr. James Milner and Zinita Dickman Murphy, was born May 20, 1923, at Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized December 25, 1923, and confirmed in 1933, at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Sumner. Ruth graduated from Sumner High School in 1940, attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota. Upon graduation from nursing school, Ruth was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and possibly would have served overseas had the war not ended. She was employed at University Hospitals in Iowa City when she met Richard C. Haw, and the couple married June 8, 1950, at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Sumner. While Richard completed his D.D.S. at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Ruth continued as an employee at University Hospitals. Ruth and Dr. Haw have been residents of Sumner since 1955. Ruth has been an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sumner, P.E.O. and the O.E.S. Ruth volunteered her time in many organizations over the years, but her most treasured time was spent with her family.

In addition to her husband, Dr. Richard C. Haw of Cresco, formerly of Sumner, she is survived by two children, Becky (Mark) Bohle and Dr. Jeffrey (Shirlee) Haw, all of Cresco; grandchildren, Phillip Bohle, Meghan (Robert) Ringoen, Katelyn (Kyle) Lensch, Tim Haw, and Ashley Haw; one great grandson, Jameson Ringoen, one sister, Marian Topp of Harlingen, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Ruth was eagerly awaiting the addition of three great grandchildren this summer.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Dr. Robert Murphy.

I am retired from the Advancement Office at Upper Iowa University and for many years helped coordinate the annual Honors & Awards scholarship banquet. I so enjoyed corresponding with Ruth and Richard, as they not only supported Ruth's mother's endowed scholarship, but Ruth also presented the scholarship to the student at the banquet each year for many years. Ruth was proud to be a UIU alum and proud to support and present her mother's scholarship. I always looked forward to seeing them and visiting with them each year. Such wonderful people. My sincere sympathies to Dr. Haw and all of Ruth's family.

End of a Journey beginning of a new normal

Ruth passed this evening at approximately 9:00p.m. holding the hand of the love of her life for 66 years. She had been surrounded by family all day, children, grandchildren all at her side. Numerous clergy, friends, and a caring staff visited, prayed and read scripture to her. She waited for the one time she could be alone with her love, to slip the bonds that held her body and pass to be with her Lord. The one thing that I would want all readers of this post to know, to digest to the fullest, to embrace and live to the fullest is the passage that I feel best sums up the life and legacy of my mother:

1 Corinthians 13:4-8New International Version (NIV)
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Please read these words and live these words in her honor and memory, but even more so .... because they are the words He has spoken!
These are the words and beliefs that she tried to instill in her family and all who knew her.
PEACE TO ALL AND COMFORT TO ALL WHO READ THESE WORDS
